The original 300 SLR racing car later evolved into a road-going Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. The modern successor, the SLS AMG spawned a racing version, the SLS AMG GT3, which later evolved into a road-going Black Series.
The Black Series was a true supercar that could contend with the elite cars of its day, including the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini's Gallardo. Power was from a 622 horsepower engine which featured a revised high-speed valve train with modified camshafts, revised cam geometry, and special racing-specification tappets and intake air ducting. The factory steel exhaust system was removed and replaced by a titanium system. Carbon fiber was found throughout the vehicle including the body panels, inner framework, and mechanical components. The interior was trimmed largely in Alcantara. AMG components were used through the vehicle.
In comparison to the standard SLS AMG, the Black Series was 150 pounds lighter. Zero-to-sixty was accomplished in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph.
The SLS AMG Black Series made its debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The first examples reached the market in June of 2013 with the U.S. destined vehicles arriving that summer. 132 examples were shipped to the United States and were finished in nine available colors.
This particular one is one of 39 U.S.-delivered cars in Obsidian Black. It has been driven 2,003 miles. It has a black interior and several optional features including the Bang & Olufsen sound system (designed especially for this model) and the Black Series Telematics package, which includes a DVD/CD changer, GPS navigation, enhanced voice control system, and AMG Performance Media, as well as a rearview camera.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2018
