The Mercedes-Benz 300 S series was produced from 1952 through 1958. It shared components from the flagship 300-series luxury sedan and four-door convertible, as well as the 300 SL Gulling. The 300 S was available as a coupe, cabriolet or roadster. Power was from a three-liter overhead-cam straight six with higher compression and triple carburetor. The gearbox was a four-speed manual unit.
After the 300 S came the 300 Sb, which was later followed by the fuel-injected 300 Sc. The 300 Sb was built for a very short period, lasting from 1954 to 1955. The 300 Sb had several notable improvements over the earlier 300 S, including front vent windows, a more efficient heating system, a redesigned dashboard, power-assisted brakes with finned drums, and a standard Becker radio with three bands. For 1955, the 300 Sb had a price tag that demanded $12,300. These vehicles were virtually hand built and utilized a fairly classic prewar design, with tear-drop fenders and tall, grille. The interior was lavishly appointed with top-grade wood and leather, and jewel-like instrumentation.
This particular 300 Sb has an older, comprehensive restoration, which had been completed by a former owner. Much of this car's early history is unrecorded; it was part of a Houston-based collection. In 2010, it was given require service and a cosmetic freshening.
The car is currently finished in its original color combination of Dark Grey (DB 164) with Light Grey leather interior, and has a floor-shifter for its four-speed manual gearbox. This car retains its original, matching-numbers engine, factory fitted luggage, a tool kit, owner's and service manuals, and factory Becker LeMans radio.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2018
