1958 Mercedes-Benz 300D

Share on:

Referred to as the 'Adenauer,' named after its most prominent customer, German chancellor Konrad Adenauer, the 300 was first introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September of 1951. The stately 'limousine' was intended as a large, formal, luxury saloon for rich businessmen and heads of state. So successful, it remained in the Mercedes-Benz lineup for 11 years under three subsequent generations, until production ceased in 1962. A total of 3,077 of the 300d, which was an extended version of the original series, were essentially hand-built from 1957-1962 in Mercedes-Benz's Sindelfingen facility.

Cuban President Fulgencio Batista ordered this car new in 1958. Batista had hosted the Cuban Grand Prix races in 1957. Impressed with the Mercedes-Benz performance, Batista ordered this $14,000 sedan with optional whitewalls, power brakes, wood trim, carpeting, a Grand Prix radio, tan leather interior with green piping, custom Karl Baisch luggage, automatic transmission and presidential flagstaffs. He and his family were reputedly driven to the airport in it on January 1st of 1959, prior to fleeing Cuba when Fidel Castro and his band of rebels entered Havana the previous night.

Castro confiscated the car for his own use until 1965 until his Mercedes-Benz 600 limousine arrived. The car was transferred to the Cuban Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, where it remained in service until 1970. The car then sat disabled for nearly 50 years, and has just 15,000 miles. The current owner obtained the car in 2015 and undertook a mechanical reconditioning. The car is largely original with the exception of one repaint in 1970. The first public showing since 1970 was at the 2018 Elegance of Hershey.
