Speedster
Chassis #: 3192
The first Kissel Speedster, dubbed the 'Silver Special,' debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in January 1919. It had been developed by stylists working with Kissel's New York distributor, Conover T. Silver; hence the name. The nickname 'Gold Bug' came from journalist W.W. Brownie Rowland, who ran a promotion in the Milwaukee Journal in which a young girl called the car a 'Gold Bug' due to its chromium yellow color and bug-like shape. Considered one of the top 100 sports cars of all time, the most expensive models were equipped with Kissel's 'Hollywood Option' of nickel-plated bumpers, an exhaust cutout, and special E & J Headlights. And early models featured outrigger seats, which were fitted to all Kissels until 1923. Gold Bugs were owned by many famous people of the age, including Amelia Earhart, Douglas Fairbanks, and Al Jolson. Fewer than 100 were built each year between 1919 and 1931, and this very original example is the only Gold Bug Speedster to survive from 1921. Over the 14 years of production, less than 2,700 Kissel Speedsters were produced with only about 30 known to survive today.
