1937 Pierce-Arrow Model 1703 Navigation
Pierce-Arrow built a reputation for building elegant, well-engineered vehicles that were often ahead of their time. In 1914, they adopted one of the company's most enduring styling hallmarks when they moved the headlights from the traditional location on either side of the radiator. They were relocated into flared housings molded into the front fenders and giving them a unique visual appearance at night, making them appear wider. Pierce trademarked this feature and it would remain a styling feature until the final model in 1938. Only in 1939 did other American car manufacturers put the headlights in the fenders.
This V12-engined Pierce-Arrow 7-passenger Enclosed Drive Limousine is the only restored survivor of the half-dozen that were built in 1937. Pierce-Arrow's 1703 series has the 7.6-liter, side-valve, 80-degree V12 engine that was first introduced in 1932. Inside, the car is richly appointed in Laidlaw wool upholstery, wooden window trim, privacy shades, embroidered passenger-assist hand straps, smoking sets, mirrored and illuminated vanity cases, a foldable footrest, and two foldaway jump-seats. The passenger compartment also features a one-way intercom for instructions to the chauffeur. This car has spent its entire life in the Seattle area. It is now with its third owner, who began an authentic, body-off restoration about 15 years ago and completed it in 2018, and then shown at the Pebble Beach Concours.
