1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competition Navigation
Ferrari's 250 GT SWB was developed from the long-wheelbase 250 GT Tour de France. Fitted with Ferrari's hugely successful 3-liter V12-engine, the first 250 GT SWB was shown at the 1959 Paris Auto Salon. The SWB could be driven as a road car or, with only a change of tires, could also win its class in any long-distance race.
This car was the first of Ferrari's 24 special lightweight alloy-bodied Comp/61 SEFAC models and the only Comp/61 to be campaigned by the Ferrari factory. The nickname 'SEFAC' was for Societa Esercizio Fabbriche Automobili e Corse S.p.A. Built to contest FIA's GT Cup Championship in 1961, modifications to these Hot Rods included a lightweight chassis of 80mm main-tubes, a Type 168B engine with Testa Rossa cylinder heads (which have bigger valves and higher compression ratios), a split-exhaust manifold, plexiglass side and rear windows, hollow door panels, more magnesium castings, a ribbed gearbox, flared rear fender openings, and more.
Entered as a Scuderia Ferrari team car in 1961 (the only one campaigned by the Ferrari factory), this car driven by Willy Mairesse finished first overall at the Grand Prix of Spa-Francorchamps 500 km, fifth overall and second in class at the ADAC 1000 km at the Nurburgring. It was then sold to Maranello Concessionaires and raced in 1961 and 1962 to numerous overall inws and other podium finishes.
Its current caretaker purchased the car in 1998.
