1964 Vollstedt Racing Special Navigation
This was the first of many Indianapolis cars built by Rolla Vollstedt of Portland, Oregon. It was first used in a Goodyear tire test where it ran 10 consecutive laps at over 150 mph in October of 1963. The following year, Hall of Fame driver and longtime Vollstedt partner Len Sutton qualified for the Indy 500 in the 8th spot on the grid. This car was the first rear-engined Offenhauser-powered car to qualify for the 500, and Sutton finished in fifteenth place. This car was copied by A.J. Watson for his own 1964 cars, and his driver, Rodger Ward, went on to win that year's USAC Championship. The USAC awarded Watson with Builder of the year for 1964, and in his acceptance speech, he said that it was actually Rolla's design that was the winner.
