When the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta was introduced in 1954, it created an unqualified sensation, with demand quickly outpacing supply, prompting Alfa Romeo to reconsider its processes and adopt a new identity as a high-volume manufacturer. The Giulietta Sports Spider was introduced in 1955, wearing a design by Pinin Farina on a modified Giulietta Spring Coupe chassis. It came at the insistence of famed New York importer Max Hoffmann, who recognized the popularity of small German and British sports cars in America. Able to surpass the 100-mph mark, the Giulietta Spider offered brisk performance courtesy of the rev-happy, all-alloy 1.3-liter twin-cam 'four.' It had a robust unitized steel body/chassis and an overall weight of less than 1,900 pounds.
In 1956 Alfa Romeo answered the demand for an enhanced version tailored for buyers with racing aspirations by introducing the Giulietta Sprint and Spider Veloce. They were fitted with modified bodywork and higher-performance engines. The engine was given a 9.1:1 compression, a pair of twin-throat Weber carburetors, and revised camshaft profiles, resulting in a boost in power by 15 percent. Top speed was now achieved at 115 mph.
Just 2,796 examples of the top-specification Giulietta Spider Veloce were produced in all.
This particular example was manufactured on December 12th, 1958, and it retains its matching numbers engine. It was given a top-quality, concours-level professional restoration that was executed over a three-year timeframe from 2009 to 2012 by Alfisti Motorsports of Bloomington, Illinois. After the work was completed, it won top honors at the 2011 AROC meeting held in Lexington, Kentucky. It has been driven less than 200 miles since restoration.
