1957 Oldsmobile Super Eighty-Eight Convertible Coupe

Oldsmobile introduced their new overhead-valve 'Rocket' V8 engine in the lighter-weight 88 series for 1949, making it - perhaps - one of the first muscle cars on American roads. Ike Turner and his Rhythm Kings' hit song of 1951, the 'Rocket 88', helped popularize the vehicle even further and put it on a path of becoming a cultural phenomenon. In 1957, Oldsmobile released the high-performance J2 option, with triple carburetion helping to unleash the 371 cubic-inch V8's full potential. The J2 used its center carburetor for everyday driving, but when extra power was needed, the two outer four barrels were opened up for full effect.

The 1957 Super 88 was given Oldsmobile's signature massive front grille that runs the full width of the car, side body trim spears and twin jet-inspired fender ornaments echoing the center hood spear. The front fenders carry the 'Super 88' crest in an overlaid rocket theme. In the back is a large wraparound bumper with huge and imposing taillights mounted high in the body. The jet-inspired appearance continued into the interior, with padded wraparound dash and 'space-age' central speedometer flanked by a host of chrome buttons, dials, and control switches. The Oldsmobile oval and crosshair crest could be found at the center of the steering wheel.

This 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible features the J2 intake system. The 371 cubic-inch 'Oldsmobile Rocket' V-8 engine offers 312 horsepower and is mated to a Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission. The J2 option was a rather expensive option, costing $395.

It has been given a full restoration and finished in Ice Green and rides on a set of wire wheels mounting period-style wide whitewall tires. Amenities in this Super 88 include power steering, power brakes, and a power top.
