Sold for $55,000 at 2018 Gooding & Company : Pebble Beach.
Mercedes-Benz advertised the W189 300 D 'Adenauer' as 'The Most Elegant Motorcar in the World.' It received its nickname from Konrad Adenauer, the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The 300 D was powered by an updated and fuel-injected version of the Mercedes-Benz three-liter SOHC six-cylinder engine. They had a pillarless hardtop design, a longer wheelbase, new brake booster, and self-leveling suspension system.

This particular example is a U.S.-specification model equipped with a three-speed automatic transmission and power steering. It is finished in its original color scheme of Medium Red (DB 516) over a beige leather interior. The car has been given a cosmetic restoration after it entered the care of the Brumos Collection in the 1990s. It was shown at the inaugural Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 1996 where it was awarded the Amelia Award for the Most Outstanding Postwar Mercedes-Benz.

The 2,996cc 6-cylinder engine offers 160 horsepower which is mated to a 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission. There are hydraulic drum brakes located at all four corners.
