Ford introduced the Bronco 4x4 in 1966 and it would earn a reputation for rugged utility and function over the following three decades.
This particular example is a first-generation example that was built as a test vehicle and delivered to Ford Motor Company's Research and Engineering Center in Michigan on August 29, 1968. It was given large tires, a Bronco Sport package, limited slip differentials, and other special features. The engine is a 302 cubic-inch Ford Windsor V8 fitted with a single Holley Downdraft carburetor and delivers nearly 280 horsepower. There is a three-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
Shortly upon completion, it was sold to Ford-backed racing firm Holman & Moody and Bill Stroppe, whose Bronco race teams won numerous off-road events. The transaction was part of Ford's 'Dollar Car' agreement, meaning the sale price was exactly $1.
The original Ford VIN was removed and replaced with Holman & Moody serial number HM9028 S, the S likely denoting Stroppe. It was given a new name, the Bronco Hunter, and the orange paint scheme which would not be seen until the 1971 introduction of Ford's Baja Bronco.
This example was re-discovered in 2016 and has since been given a concours restoration.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2018
