The futuristically styled Model DS was introduced at the 1955 Paris Salon, 18 years after secret development. Within 15 minutes of the show, 743 orders were taken with total orders received on the first day totaling 12,000 cars. They had an aerodynamically efficient, low-drag bodyshell with an all-independent, self-levelling, hydro-pneumatic suspension, plus power-operated brakes, clutch and steering. It was the first mass-production car with front power disc brakes. It offered superior ride comfort and quality that was unmatched by any other European car of the era. The original engine was a 1,911 cc overhead-valve, long-stoke unit that was replaced in 1966 by a short-stroke 1,985 cc unit, also available in 2,175 cc and 2,347 cc versions. Other DS developments included swiveling headlights, fuel injection and a five-speed manual gearbox.
Despite its unimpressive acceleration afforded by the four-cylinder engine, the DS was successful in motorsports, especially in rallying, where sustained speeds of poor surfaces were paramount. They won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1959, and in 1966 - following the controversial disqualification of the BMW Mini-Cooper team.
The top-of-the-range was the Pallas specification, named after the Green goddess, adding additional luxury and refinement for its occupants.
This particular example was built near the end of the model's production run. It is a European-specification example that is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox and swiveling covered headlamps. As a top-of-the-range Pallas model, it has enhanced sound-deadening, high-grade leather upholstery, and more elaborate exterior trim.
This Citroen DS23 Pallas was delivered new to the Netherlands in 1974 and remained in the care of one Dutch owner for 25 years. Around 2008, it was given a restoration in the Netherlands. It is finished in black with a brown interior and rides on Michelin XAS tires. There is a Becker Mexico radio, jack, tools, and roadside equipment.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2018
