Lincoln History

1929 Lincoln Model L

Share on:

Henry Leland started the Lincoln Motor Car Company in 1920, who in 1902 had built the Cadillac Motor Car Company out of the remains of the failed Henry Ford Company. By 1922 Lincoln was on the brink of bankruptcy and was sold to Leland's former nemesis, Henry Ford.

In 1929 the Lincoln engineers increased the engine's oil pressure and adopted rubber engine mounts. The design team added a new, higher, radiator and hood line. In addition to twenty-four cataloged custom bodies, Lincoln offered twelve bodies of its own design. The Model L Lincoln was noted for sturdiness, speed, all-wheel brakes, and handling. They were favorites of both sides of the law. The Chicago Police purchased 17 examples for their pursuit of Al Capone.

This example is a Seven Passenger Sport Touring with coachwork by Locke. It is one of seven known to exist.
