1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Navigation
By 1965, Shelby needed more speed from his Ford 289-powered small block Cobra. Constructor and driver Ken Miles recommended switching to the 510 horsepower, 427 cubic-inch 'sild-oiler' V-8 big-block. Along with the larger engine, the Cobra received a much bigger tube frame that was five inches wider, coil spring suspension and flared fenders to accommodate wider wheels. The 427 Cobras used the Ford top-loader 4-speed transmission and had independent rear suspension with a Salisbury-type 4HU center housing, like that used on Jaguars. Unlike the Jaguar E-Type, the Cobra's disc brakes were mounted on the ends of the axles rather than inboard. Due to supply issues, the last 100 or so Cobras received a 428 engine instead of the legendary 427. The 427 side oiler Cobras, like this example, are more desirable. Shelby built 998 Cobras from 1961 until 1968.
