When civilian automobile production in America resumed in late 1945, the Hudson Motor Car Company managed to return to production levels that they had achieved in the 1930s. The vehicles were subtle updates of the 1942 models, with models for 1946 consisting of the Super 6, Commodore 6, Super 8, and Commodore 8. All Hudson car models now share a 121-inch wheelbase. The proven L-head inline six- and eight-cylinder engines displaced 212 cubic inches and 254 cubic inches, respectively, and transmission options included the Drive Master, Vacumotive Drive, and overdrive. For 1947, the Hudson design would remain mostly unchanged, except for additional options and minor detail updates to interior and exterior appointments. In 1948, Hudson introduced the revolutionary 'Step Down' model line, which would continue until the end of the 1954 production run.
In 1947, a group of New York City Hudson dealers organized one of the first television advertising campaigns, catapulting Hudson's marketing strategy and helping to spur sales. There were 93,870 calendar-year shipments for 1946, followed by 103,310 the following year, earning Hudson an 11th place in the American sales ranking for 1947.
This particular example is a 1947 Hudson Super Six Brougham which was manufactured in September of 1947, making it one of the final Hudsons built with the traditional body-on-frame construction before the introduction of the new 'Step Down' models that debuted in November of 1947. This car joined the Hostetler Collection in 1987, having been purchased from Mike Whited. While in Mr. Whited's care, it was given a repaint. The interior remains original. The car has dual spotlights, a clock, a steel sun visor, and white sidewall tires. The engine is a 212 cubic-inch L-head inline six-cylinder unit fitted with a single Carter carburetor. There is a three-speed manual transmission and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2019
