1971 Datsun 510 Navigation
This Datsun 510 was purchased new by Larry Edwards from Newport Datsun in the early 1970s. Larry Edwards worked at the dealership part-time and bought the car from a lady who had traded it in. The dealership owner, Bob Crumpler, decided to sponsor Larry Edward's racing under Newport Datsun in Newport News, Virginia and Bob Crumpler Datsun in Portsmouth, Virginia. The agreement was to pay Larry $100 a month under the sponsorship. Larry auto-crossed the car at first, but eventually got bit by the road racing bug. It wasn't long before he obtained his SCCA racing license with the car and won his first four SCCA races. The car would go on to successfully race regionally and nationally over a period of forty years at tracks such as Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Nelson Ledges, Summit Point, and Savannah. The car competed against the likes of Paul Newman, Dave Frellsen, and many other renowned racers of the period. In the late 1970's, Larry sold the car to a well-known Datsun racer named Thomas Speed. Speed went on to race the car successfully throughout the 1980's, but would eventually sell the car back to Larry Edwards after a divorce. Larry continued to race the car throughout the 1990s in SCCA and vintage events all over the Midwest and East Coast. The car would make a trip to the SCCA National Runoffs in 1995, driven by friend and mechanic Larry Miller. Miller finished 18th that year at Mid-Ohio. In 2003, it came time for Larry to retire from racing. Larry sold the car to well-known Historic Trans-Am driver and collector, Bill Ockerlund. Ockerlund would go on to restore the car to its original livery, and raced it at tracks like Indy, Sears Point, and Road America. In 2017, Ockerlund sold it to the car's current caretaker, Glenn Chiou, who races it along the West Coast.
