1951 Porsche 356 Coupe

In September of 1951 this Gmund coupe was driven around the Montlyhery banking for 72 hours at 94.66 mph, a new world record. The car is powered by Porsche's then experimental 1500 Super engine. Afterwards it was displayed on the stand at the Paris Salon, encrusted with bugs and oil, right next to the shiny new Porsches. This was a significant accomplishment for a car composed mostly of Volkswagen parts.

While the exact number is debatable, there were less than 50 Gmünd coupes built in 1949. A handful, with serial numbers above 50 were converted to Sport Leicht specifications and renumbered as 3000 series cars. These cars carried louvered steel quarter windows, belly fairings, a pedestal mounted shifter and for Le Mans, a third roof mounted wiper arm, driving lights and a remote oil filter.

Gmünd coups carried the Porsche name into competition for three years at Le mans and in several international rallies.
