This 1914 Simplex 50HP Speedcar is a 'long-stroke' example. During the early 1940s, the car was acquired from H. Jewett Orth, Jr., of Frederick, Maryland, by Alec Ulmann. New York mechanic Charlie Stich and Smith Hempstone Oliver drove the car to Washington, D.C., after which Stich continued on with it to Ulmann's in New York City. Ulmann later sold the car to Colonel Ralph Earle of Haverford, Pennsylvania, from whom it was acquired by the early collector Richard C. Paine of Mount Desert Island, Maine.
Several East Coast collectors would own the car after Mr. Paine. One individual commissioned from restorer Temple Baldwin its present speed car body, built to a Holbrook design. It was then advertised for sale in Hemmings Motor News. Around the late 1990s, the car entered the care of Don C. Boulton.
The car is presently finished in a dark plum color with a matching button-tufted leather interior and maroon wheels. There are dual rear-mounted spares secured with leather straps, an oval tank, and two curved bucket seats. There are wrought Badger Brass Solarclypse headlamps, fed by a Prestolite acetylene tank. It has an original electric self-starting system that operates the nearly 600 cubic-inch engine. The engine is fed by an original Simplex carburetor. The 50 horsepower is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission and dual-chain final drive.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2019
