Homologation requirements for Group 4 competition required 400 road cars to be built, which resulted in the development of 'Porsche 930.' In October of 1974, Ernst Fuhrmann introduced the first Turbo production model which combined a KKK turbocharger with a reworked 3.0-liter engine. Vehicles destined for the road had 260 horsepower and a top speed of 153 mph. In the back were flared wheel arches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler borrowed from the Carrera model. The interior was well-appointed and the most luxurious yet observed in a 911. In 1978, the engine grew to a displacement size of 3.3-liters, and gained an inter-cooler. Power rose to 300 bhp (the U.S. models had 265 bhp) and top speed reached 160 mph.
The racing Porsche 935 pioneered the 'slant' or 'flat' nose design, and soon customers were demanding versions they could purchase. Kremer Racing offered a conversion service that was later taken up by the factory's own Customer Department for special order (Sonderwunschen) in 1981. It became an official Porsche option in 1986. The converted front wings were steel, incorporating cooling vents and pop-up headlamps. Extra cooling intakes were placed ahead of the rear wheels. The interior featured full leather.
This Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet Slant Nose was produced in the final nine-month production run of the original 930 Turbo. It has the Getrag G50 5-speed manual transmission, 4-wheel disc brakes, and a 3299cc SOHC turbocharged 6-cylinder engine fitted with a Bosch Fuel Injection system offering just over 280 horsepower.
The car's original owner was Dr. Jack Frost of Iowa who selected its Guards Red paint, a black leather interior with matching red contrast stripes, and the M505 slant nose. He selected European delivery and used the car on an extended road trip holiday across the continent. The car was brought to the United States and driven sympathetically over the years. Upon Dr. Frost's passing, the vehicle remained in the family and his son has taken over the stewardship of the vehicle as of 2014. Currently, it has roughly 6,000 miles on the odometer.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2019
