1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Navigation
Ex-racer Carroll Shelby created the legendary Cobra in 1962 by installing Ford's lightweight V-8 engine in a slightly lengthened nose of the AC Ace. AC's Thames-Ditton facility shipped the body and chassis to California where Shelby American dropped in the engine, made numerous performance modifications, and completed assembly. The first 75 production models were equipped with Ford's 260 cubic-inch V8 while later cars used the 289 cubic-inch, 306 horsepower V-8. Beginning in 1965, in an effort to keep pace with big-block-equipped Corvettes, Shelby upsized the motor yet again, using Ford's 427 cubic-inch, 425 horsepower side-oiler V-8. A total of 654 units were produced from 1962-1968.
Last raced in 1967, this competition Cobra was fitted with a Holman & Moody 800 horsepower V-8 modified and built by the legendary Waddell Wilson and later converted for use in the GT40 MKII program. It is equipped with special experimental lightweight components for racing. It has just 800 miles from new and includes its original 1965 Goodyear race tires.
Last raced in 1967, this competition Cobra was fitted with a Holman & Moody 800 horsepower V-8 modified and built by the legendary Waddell Wilson and later converted for use in the GT40 MKII program.
