1933 Duesenberg Model SJ Navigation
Fred and Augie Duesenberg founded the company in 1913 with the goal of building engines and race cars. They were self-taught engineers and they also built many experimental cars.
With E.L. Cord's purchase of Duesenberg in 1926, he sought to produce the most powerful, most elegant, and most desired cars in the world. Years later, many would agree that he accomplished his goals. Whether it was a Gordon Buehrig-designed body or a custom coachwork car like this one, Duesenberg's exuded power, and style.
This Duesenberg Convertible Berline with coachwork by Walter M. Murphy had a single owner for over five decades. One of just 36 factory supercharged Model J's, it has been faithfully restored to as-delivered condition. It has the 17-inch wheels and skirted fenders that were fitted on later Duesenbergs, and it retains the European-style Marchal reflectors within the Twilite headlamps. This SJ was sold new to Peruvian landowner Antonio Chopitea. After delivery to New York, the car was shipped to his estate in France, where it remained until 1939. With Europe moving ever closer to war, the car was then shipped to Chopitea's home in Lima, Peru, where he used it regularly until it became difficult to get new tires. After he gifted the car to his chauffeur, it was sold to the local Coca-Cola distributor in 1952. Its next owner had the car restored with Jack Nethercutt and the finished car was first shown at a CCCA Grand Classic Concours in Pasadena in 1968. After several more owners and another restoration, the car was acquired by its current owners.
