1989 Bentley Turbo R Navigation
In 1989, North America saw the introduction of the Bentley Turbo R. The 'R' stood for 'road holding.' It featured a retuned suspension. The suspension changes transformed the soft and less than well-controlled ride of the Mulsanne Turbo into that of a world class sports sedan.
The use of greatly improved anti-roll bars (100% stiffer in front and 60' stiffer in the rear) and increasing the damping created a 50% increase in overall roll stiffness. A Panhard rod to anchor the rear sub-frame was also introduced, reducing side-to-side movement in corners. Spring rates remained the same as on the Mulsanne.
Official figures were never provided by the company, but in 1988 Motor Trend magazine estimated power output at 296 horsepower with 486.8 lb-ft of peak torque. Priced at $195,000 in the United States market, the Turbo R slotted above the Bentley Mulsanne S and Rolls-Royce Silver Spur.
