The Corvair was manufactured by Chevrolet to compete with the Volkswagen Beetle and other compact imports from 1960 - 1969. It is the only American-designed, mass-produced passenger car with a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine.

The Corvair's reputation was negatively impacted by a controversy surrounding its handling. The car was scrutinized in Ralph Nader's book Unsafe at Any Speed. Nader state that G.M.'s management resorted to unethical measures in building them. In response, and after a 1972 Texas A&M University safety commission report for the National highway Traffic Safety Administration, it was found that the 1960-1963 Corvairs possessed no greater potential for loss of control in extreme situations that its contemporaries.

This Spyder was at the top of the line and represents a prime example of the first domestic turbocharged car marketed in the United States. Purchased nearly two decades ago, it was restored to as-delivered condition in 1994.
