1969 Matra M530 Coupe

MATRA (Mecanique Aviation Traction) was a French company known for the design and manufacturing of automobiles, bicycles, aeronautics, and weaponry. The M530 was Matra's first fully in-house engineered and designed road-going sportscar and was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1967. By that time, Matra was already well involved in Motorsports and would go on to win the Formula 1 championship in 1969, delivering Jackie Stewart his maiden driver championship that year. Matra would also claim victory at the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1972, 1973, and 1974, with their renowned V12 powering the MS670.

The Matra M530 consisted of a fully independent front and rear suspension on a platform chassis in sheet metal with perforations and clad with GRP bodywork for lightness. The mid-mounted V4 Ford Taunus engine produced 73 horsepower, and the low-mounted gearbox allowed for a rear luggage compartment. The compact engine gave sufficient space for '+2' rear seats. Other noteworthy features were the pop-up headlights, two-piece removable Targa top and, most notably, the outstanding avant-grade design. In 1970, the M530LX was introduced with trim updates, followed by the lower-cost M530SX variant that replaced the pop-up lights with four pods mounted atop the front end.

Matra was much like a French Boeing - they were an aerospace company making missiles among other associated products - but, unlike Boeing, they also built Formula and sports cars. The M530 was made from March 1967 to April 1969 - all of 2,063 units - with a steel frame and Targa-top polyester body, its mid-mounted V4 1,699cc high compression 70 horsepower engine, and 4-speed gearbox bought from Ford of Germany off their Taunus 15M TS sedan production line. It had superseded the more romantically named Matra Djet, a car designed by Rene Bonnet, but as Matra's first in-house design - this time named after a missile! Autocar in March 1969 ran the avant grade car out at 95 mph.
