1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Riviera Town Car

Like its predecessor, the 40/50 hp Silver Ghost, all of the New Phantoms destined for American owners were built at the Rolls-Royce factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Many Springfield-built cars were bodied in house by Rolls-Royce Custom Coachwork. But after Rolls-Royce purchased Brewster & Company in 1926, the New Phantom could also be ordered in one of 26 different styles drawn by Brewster's chief designer, Carl Beck. The New Phantom was Rolls-Royce's flagship model until the Phantom II was released in 1929; the name of the New Phantom was then changed to the Phantom I. Due to the huge cost of retooling, Rolls-Royce decided that all the Phantom IIs would be produced exclusively in England.

This Phantom I is one of only ten Riviera Town Cars bodied by Brewster. It was also one of the last Phantom I's to be sold through the New York Rolls-Royce agent, J.S. Inskip, two years after the Springfield factory closed. Its first owner was a Mr. E. F. Jeffe of New York City.
