1916 Packard Twin Six Navigation
The Packard 1-35 Twin Six, first built in May 1915 and introduced as a 1916 model, was one of the most important cars of the Nickel Era. It was fitted with the first-ever American-made 12-cylinder engine, designed by Colonel Jesse Vincent. This was the introduction of a very smooth high-speed engine to the luxury car market. The V-12 engine was comprised of two six-cylinder cast iron blocks set at a 60-degree angle set atop an aluminum crankcase. It displaced a total of 424 cubic inches and produced 88 horsepower. Pistons were made from lightweight aluminum and there was full pressure lubrication which added to longevity.
This engine powered the company's prestige models up to 1922. In 1915, the Packard outsold the equivalent Pierce-Arrow by four-to-one, a number that doubled the following year.
This Packard Twin Six Touring was bought in 1916 by Thomas Avery Lamb of South Cosco, Maine, who owned the car for eight years, driving it only during the summer months. In 1924, the car passed to his daughter, Mary Lamb Riley, and for the next 48 years, the Twin Six remained undisturbed in her family's garage. It's in remarkably original condition with its original pin striping and Thomas Lamb's 'TAL' monogram on the doors; it even has the original leather strap to hold the starter handle in place.
The current owner retains a photo showing Marjorie Lamb Riley, granddaughter of Thomas Avery Lamb, sitting in the back seat of the car. On the back of the photo is written 'Dad's Car!'.
