Prescott Kelly purchased four of the surplus DRA 911 SC/RS models when their racing careers had concluded. This particular 911 was built by DRA using a 1984 Porsche factory replacement tub, number 004 0035. This was not uncommon, as several of the SC/RS tubs required replacing after the grueling rally competition.
It is believed that this example was one of two cars that contributed to the history of 'car number 6,' an internal designation denoted by the small '6' decal in the rear window. Power is from a three-liter SC/RS, air-cooled, single-overhead-camshaft flat-6 engine with Bosch Mechanical fuel injection. It produces 280 horsepower and has a five-speed manual transmission and four-wheel ventilated hydraulic disc brakes.
When this car's racing duties concluded in 1987, the DRA/Rothman 911 was sold to a Japanese collector. James K. Dobbs III acquired it in March of 2003.
The Porsche currently has a VIN that corresponds to a 1984 RHD Carrera 3.2. It may have been given this to help it become registered for road use in Japan or in the United Kingdom during its racing days.
This Porsche has been given a sympathetic restoration and thorough mechanical refurbishment which was performed in the early 2000s. Work was done to the fuel, plumbing, electrical, braking, and suspension system. The racing transaxle was replaced with a rebuilt standard 915 gearbox, which has better ratios for street use. The original transaxle and five spare wheels with slick racing tires remain with the vehicle.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2019
