Jaguar won the 24 Hours of Le Mans on five occasions between 1951 and 1957 with its C-Type and D-Type racers. The XJ13 was designed and built to continue the legacy of Jaguar at LeMans. Work began in 1965 and the prototype was ready by March of 1966. Later that year, Jaguar and BMC merged and the project fell dormant. 1966 was the year that Ford would be victorious at Le Mans with the GT40 powered by the 7.0-liter V8 engine. Ford would win at LeMans again in 1967, 1968 and 1969. By this point, the Jaguar XJ13 was very dated.

On January 21st of 1971, the XJ13 was brought to a race track for filming where it was driven by Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis. Unfortunately, he flipped the car in a heavy accident due to a damaged tire. Dewis was uninjured, but the car was a total loss. The car was later repaired by Jaguar and currently resides in the Jaguar Museum in Coventry.

Since only one example was ever built and is currently in the Jaguar Museum, collectors never have the chance to experience the car. To remedy this problem, Rob Tempero crafted a limited run of replicas. Six examples were built by the New Zealand-based company Tempero Coach and Motor Company Ltd., and this particular example is the first of the six. The original plans were used to fabricate the cars, along with the original production methods, qualities, and materials of the original construction. It has an aluminum monocoque chassis clothed with an aluminum body. In the front is a modified E-Type suspension and power is from a dry-sump Jaguar V-12 engine backed by a ZF five-speed DS5/2 transaxle. The windscreen is made from the original Triplex molds.

The weight and dimensions are built to the original specifications.

This example has been shown in JCNA-sanctioned concours events and has placed 1st in Class several times, with scores of 9.992 at the 2016 International Jaguar Festival and 9.99 in 2015 and 9.986 in 2014 at the San Diego Jaguar Club Concours. It was shown at the La Jolla Concours d'Elegance and recently was on display at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, CA.
