Ransom Eli Olds switched introduced his curved-dash model in 1900 and ready for the purchase a year later. The start of production was delayed due to a fire in the factory, so the cars were not available until late summer. It had a price tag of $650, the same amount it weighed (650 pounds). Power was from a horizontal single-cylinder engine located under the seat, and was backed by a two-speed planetary transmission and driver controls on the right, with steering by center tiller. Ransom Eli Olds had switched to internal combustion after experimenting with steam and electric propulsion.
The suspension was comprised of long leaf springs located on each side, and connected the front and rear axles. The body was built from wood and attached to the top of the springs. Any forward or backward rocking motion was handled by a small transverse full-elliptic spring. In 1902, truss rods were installed to the axles.
By 1903, the Curved-dash had become America's best-selling car and production would continue through 1907.
This particular Model 6C CDO was registered by Albert Karras of Elk Creek, Nebraska, on August 7th of 1905 and issued medallion number 441 by the Nebraska Secretary of State. In 1993, the car was acquired by the Merrick Collection from Alfred Bongers of Grand Blanc, Michigan.
The car is currently in restored condition, finished in black with red accents, and has the Oldsmobile emblems on the sides of the seat. Additionally, it has the Selden Patent plate on the rear of the body. The seat is upholstered in diamond-pattern buttoned black leather.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2020
