By 1954, Maserati had a proven track record as a successful builder of under 2-liter sports racing cars. The factory had also just introduced the very competitive 250 F Grand Prix car. While Maserati decided that 3-liter was the practical limit for the 250 F engine design, it seemed to be the right time to develop a larger engined sports racer based on the 250 F engine and chassis. Even though the competition would have larger engines, with an excellent handling Grand Prix-based chassis and good brakes, the factory felt that overall wins in World Sports Car Championship races might be attainable. As a result, the 300 S can be thought of as a 250 F enlarged and adapted to sports car use.

The 300 S enjoyed a very successful career that spanned four seasons of international racing. Generally considered to have one of the best balanced chassis and exceptional brakes for the era, these cars were very effective and reliable racers. In addition to international success, 300 S's were quite popular in the United States, as their chassis and brakes proved ideal for the tighter American circuits.

3068 started life as a factory team car being entered for the 1956 Swedish Grand Prix for Sports Cars. Driven by Joakim Bonnier and Francisco Godia, it retired with gearbox failure. After Sweden, 3068 was sold to A.D. Logan, an Oklahoma enthusiast. Logan and subsequent owner, A.V. Dayton, entered the car often with Dale Duncan (Masten's Gregory's brother-in-law) as driver. While raced primarily throughout the Southwest, 3068 did run Sebring in 1958, reuniting itself with Bonnier, who co-drove with Duncan and Jack Hinkle.

By the 1960's, the tired old racer had acquired a Chevrolet V-8 with which to finish its last years. In 1972, Joel Finn rescued 3068 from abandonment in the Texas desert and various owners began a long, slow restoration process to bring it back to the race track.
