1911 Lozier Indy Racer Racer

The Lozier legacy began in the 1880s when Henry Lozier Sr. brokered and manufactured high-quality sewing machines. Next came a successful bicycle company in Plattsburgh, N.Y. which was sold in 1899 for approximately $4 million dollars. Then came motorcars, which were produced in Plattsburgh before relocating to Detroit in 1910. From the beginning, Loziers were exceptionally well-engineered automobiles built from the finest materials available. It is believed that over 3,500 Lozier automobiles were built during the company's existence, lasting from 1900 until 1915, with 35 complete cars and five chassis remaining.

By 1910, the Lozier's speed and endurance led to more 24-hour endurance speed records than any other manufacturer. They were the 1911 AAA National Champions and were one of the favorites to win the inaugural 1911 Indy 500.
'Smiling Ralph' Mulford was a racer and part-time Sunday school teacher who drove a Lozier wearing number '33' to a second-place finish in the inaugural Indy 500 of 1911. He drove with his wife from Lozier's Detroit factory to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for that first '500'. The race took nearly seven hours to complete and the official record shows that 'Smiling Ralph' was one minute and seventeen seconds behind the winner of the race. Some historians believe that Mulford and the Lozier actually won the race. Loziers were rivals of Rolls-Royce and the most expensive American car. Their record of victories in long-distance races, races that factory driver Mulford called 'grinders' for their durations of up to 24 hours, was unrivaled.

After that first '500' of 1911, the 4-cylinder, 50 hp Lozier was driven back to the Lozier factory in Detroit, re-bodied, and sold. This is a re-creation of that car.
