Born in Argentina, Alejandro De Tomaso began racing cars locally and then headed to Europe where he raced sports cars and ultimately participated in two Formula One races. In 1959, he formed DeTomaso Automobili in Modena, Italy.
Looking to create sports cars that rivaled Ferrari and Lamborghini, De Tomaso began with the Vallelunga before launching the Mangusta in 1967. Bold styling by Giorgetto Giugiario featured gullwing hinged covers over the engine and luggage compartment. Its name was a jibe at the Shelby.
Utilizing an American sourced Ford 289 cubic-inch V8 engine backed by a 5-speed transaxle, this mid-engine two-seat sports has a balanced chassis and beautiful styling. DeTomaso Automobili of Italy commissioned coachbuilder Ghia to create a sleek and sporty two-seater. Young designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was given the assignment, and it debuted at the 1965 Turin Motor Show.
The European version received a more powerful Ford 289-cu. in. engine mated to a five-speed ZF gearbox. Contemporary road tests quoted a top speed of 250 km/h. Production ended after 401 cars, and only 150 found European owners. Today, 250 are believed to have survived worldwide. The Ford/DeTomaso partnership would eventually lead t the development of the Pantera.
