Hanomag was a company that had built steam engine-powered trucks, farm equipment, and locomotives starting in 1836. Their first automobile was the Hanomag 2/10 PS, a 2-seat car powered by a 503cc 1-cylinder water-cooled 10hp engine capable of speeds of 40 mph. The chain-driven vehicle was produced from 1924 to 1928 and was available as a coupe or convertible. It was referred to as the 'Kommissbrot' or loaf of rye bread because of its small squarish shape. Running boards were eliminated and the fenders were integrated into the body to make the seats wide enough for two. The rear-mounted engine afforded more legroom for passengers. The compact drivetrain allowed the floor to be lower making it possible to enter the car from the ground without a running board. A total of 15,775 cars were built with few surviving.
Remnants of the company still exist today. Hanomag AG shares were purchased by Komatsu in 1989 and Komatsu Hanomag GmbH has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the global construction machine manufacturer since 2002.
