1954 Nash Metropolitan Navigation
Nash-Kelvinator commissioned William Flajole to design a small car for the American market. The car was built by Austin in the UK by Nash-Kelvinator International or NKI. The first cars left the factory in October of 1953 with the 'NKI Custom' nameplate. Power came from a 42 h.p. four-cylinder Austin A40 1200cc engine.
In 1954 the car was renamed the 'Metropolitan'. Dealers were asked to rebadge existing inventory with the new name. The suggested retail price was $1469 for the convertible and $1455 for the hardtop.
This Nash NKI Custom was built in February 1954 and escaped the name rebadge. In 1956 the engine size was increased to 1500cc which increased horsepower to 52. The familiar two-tone paint scheme and houndstooth interior became standard in 1957. Metropolitans were produced through 1962.
