1902 Grout Model K Runabout

Grouts were built in Orange, Massachusetts from 1900-1912. Grout followed its steam touring car with a runabout. Both the boiler and the engine were located in the front and encased for protection.

The two-cylinder engine produces 10 horsepower and used slide valves employing link motion. The burner for the boiler ran on either kerosene or gasoline and started with a match in 3 to 5 minutes. The engine drives directly to a countershaft with power transmitted to the rear wheels by use of individual chains.

The throttle was operated by means of a separate wheel on the steering wheel and could operate independently of the steering wheel. The Grout could travel 40 miles on one filling of water and 80 miles on a filling of fuel. With onboard supplies, the Grout had a range of 150 miles.
