Team Penske's 15th Indy 500 saw winner Helio Castroneves' 2009 pole-winning Dallarda/Honda win 'the greatest spectacle in racing' in the Indianapolis Speedway's centennial year. This was the eighth and final Team Penske Indy 500 victory wearing Marlboro's iconic red and white livery.
Castroneves clinched his third Indy 500 pole in this car with a speed of 224.846. Teammate Ryan Briscoe qualified second to give Team Penske its seventh one-two start at Indy. Castroneves' crew also won their eighth and Team Penske's seventeenth Pit Stop Challenge.
Helio took over first place on lap 142 leading 66 laps total, including the first and the last. As usual he did not disappoint his fans after the checkered flag. After becoming Indy's ninth three-time winner he stopped his car on Indy's front straight and climbed the safety fence to celebrate joined by his crew and, to the surprise of many, by team owner Roger Penske.
