1897 Benz 10HP Navigation
This late-1890s Benz has a formal body style known as the Mylord-Coupe, similar to a horse-drawn carriage of the era, with an enclosed passenger compartment and an open chauffeur area in the front. The rear compartment has a collapsible landaulet top and side windows that could be lowered for further ventilation.
It is believed that all of the Mylord-Coupes were sold in the United Kingdom and reportedly used by the British Royal Family. The estimated number of examples produced varies but currently, there are only two known to be extant, with one housed in the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart.
This particular example was acquired from the U.K. as an original engine and pair of axles by Willis Boyd of Nevada and imported to the United States via John Bentley in 1987. A restoration soon followed by Allan Schmidt, of Horseless Carriage Restorations in Escondido, California.
The example from the Mercedes-Benz Museum was used as a reference in creating this example. During Mr. Boyd's ownership, the car appears to have been registered as 1895, on the basis of a story that the chassis had been built that year but the Contra-Engine installed later. It is believed, however, that a more accurate estimate is from 1987.
In 1989, the car was shown by Mr. Body at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It was acquired by the Schnuerer Collection in 2003, then treated to additional work performed by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA, including a full rebuild of the engine in 2008.
This Benz was shown at many Concours d'Elegance, and was driven in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in 2008 as a guest, carrying Jutta Benz. It was also part of the Petersen Automotive Museum's exhibit, Town Cars: Arriving in Style, from February to October 2014.
The body is finished in forest green with yellow striping and a black leather landau top and upholstery. It is powered by a Contra-Motor with opposed twin-cylinders, a 2,690cc displacement, and develops ten horsepower. There is a three-speed Planetary transmission with double chain drive, elliptical leaf springs, and rear-wheel drum brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2020
