The Chrysler Corporation commissioned the Boyertown Body Works of Boyertown, PA in 1939 to build several station wagon bodies on the Dodge chassis. One of the designs that followed was called the Town and Country, reportedly due to the front appearing 'town' and the back 'country.' Chrysler division president David A. Wallace secretly commissioned the engineering department at Chrysler's Highland Park plant to build his vision for the car, and once completed it was shown to management who immediately ordered it into production and introduced in March 1941 as a mid-year model. Production was brief due to the onset of World War II, making its re-introduction in 1946 when peacetime resumed. Five body styles were to be offered, including a two-door sedan (Brougham), a convertible coupe, a four-door sedan, a two-door hardtop, and a roadster. The wagon of 1941 and 1942 was discontinued and only the four-door sedan and convertible coupe ever made it to production.
This particular example is finished in Noel Green with Bedford Cord and leather interior. Much of its wood appears original and it has been well-maintained throughout its life. It has Chrysler's Fluid Drive semi-automatic transmission, dual side-mounted spotlights, a factory radio, a heater, and a clock. It was the recipient of its AACA First Junior award in 2014.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2020
