Sunbeam introduced the Alpine in 1959 and its humble beginnings included the underpinnings of the Hillman Husky and powered by a four-cylinder, 1.5-liter engine of the Sunbeam Rapier delivering 78 horsepower. The Alpine wore a finned body penned by Rootes' own designers. In 1964, a more powerful V-8 version was introduced, dubbed the Tiger. The early examples were powered by a 260 cubic-inch Ford V8 engine delivering 164 horsepower and backed by a Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed transmission.
The existence of the Tiger was the idea of Rootes' U.S. West Coast sales manager, Ian Garrad, who envisioned a more powerful Alpine offered at a reasonable price. Carroll Shelby performed much of the engineering, including building the prototype. Later Mark II versions, built under Chrysler, used Ford's 289 V8 with 210 horsepower and several of distinct updates.
After Sunbeam's parent company, the Rootes Group, was sold to Chrysler Corporation, the Ford-powered Tiger was soon discontinued from the lineup. During its production lifespan, 7,100 examples were buitl including 633 Mark II examples.
This particular example was delivered to its first owner in Europe. It drive about the Continent before shipping it home to the United States in Ohio. Later in its life, the Sunbeam was put into storage and ultimately acquired by the current owner in 2014 from the daughter of the original owner. At the time the odometer showed 33,000 miles. The consignor, a restoration shop owner who previously restored other Tigers, began an 1,800-hour restoration. The car was stripped to bare metal and refinished in its original Carnival Red with accent side stripes replicated as built. Both hardtop and a new soft top are included.
Since the restoration was completed, the car has been driven approximately 3,000 miles.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2020
