Before the official launch of the MGA, three aluminum-bodied prototypes competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with two examples finishing the grueling race, helping to secure the company's international racing pedigree. Refinements included the addition of a Fixed Head Coupe in 1956 and the uprated MGA 1600 by 1960.
This particular 1960 MGA 1600 is powered by a 1,789cc OHV inline 4-cylinder engine with twin SU carburetors developing 94 horsepower at 5,500 RPM. This engine, an MGB-Type unit, had been installed by the time it was acquired by its prior owner. There is a four-speed manual gearbox with front disc brakes and rear hydraulic drums. The front suspension is independent with wishbones and coil springs while the back used a live axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs.
This MGA was acquired by the previous owner in 1994 and soon treated to a complete restoration by Barry Briskman of Scottsdale, Arizona, who completed the work in 1996. It is finished in red with black leather upholstery. There is an oil cooler and coolant overflow tank.By Daniel Vaughan | Jul 2020
