Maserati introduced the Ghibli at the Torino Motor Show in 1966 wearing styling by Ghia's head stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro. It had a low and long razor-edge shaped appearance that was sophisticated, refined, aggressive, and elegant. Power was from a four-cam, dry sump V-8 engine giving it a top speed of 160 mph.

The coupe was followed by a Spider version in 1969, again with styling by Giugiaro. The 4.9 SS variant appeared the following year with 335 horsepower on tap, an increase of 25 horsepower over the original 4.7-liter engine. The top speed was now 170 mph.

The total production of the Ghibli Spiders reached 128 units with 70 originally destined for the United States. Of the 30 4.9 SS Spiders that were sold new in the U.S., 24 examples came with the ZF five-speed manual gearbox - the remaining six had BorgWarner automatic transmissions.

This particular example left the factory finished in the color scheme of Oro Longchamps (Longchamps Gold) with Marrone (Brown) Connolly leather upholstery. It was a U.S.-destined example that came with the ZF five-speed gearbox, Campagnolo cast alloy wheels, Pirelli tires, a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio, and Veglia instruments calibrated in miles per hour.

The car received its manufacturer's certificate of origin on December 7th of 1971 and, in January of 1972, the car was sent to the U.S. by boat and then delivered to Grossman Motor Car Corporation, the official Maserati dealer located in West Nyack, New York. The car's first private owner, Irene Young of Westport, Connecticut, took possession on April 28th of 1972.

In 1987, a Florida-based car dealer named Ed Waterman acquired the gold Ghibli Spider. At the time it had approximately 54,000 miles on the odometer. It was then sold to Midvo Leasing Inc. of Worthington, Ohio, and remained in the US through the early 1990s. By spring 1993, the Ghibli Spider had been sold to Swedish Maserati importer Ulf Sundberg and in 1999 it was shown at the Maserati Classic International at Goodwood. A short time later, the car was sold to Lennart Liden of Vence, France, who entrusted the car to Maserati specialist Candini in Modena, for service in fall 2005.

The Ghibli Spider has recently returned to the U.S. and was owned by Jacques Pozzo di Borgo, the owner of Maseratisource and MIE Corporation.

This Ghibli Spider currently has an older cosmetic restoration and is finished in a triple black color scheme.
