1956 Chevrolet Corvette SR Navigation
In 1956, Ed Cole, General Manager of Chevrolet, decided to save the Corvette from extinction by promoting it as a performance car. Corvette serial number 9 was converted at Sebring under Engineering Shop Order 6911 using RPO SR (Special Racing.) options added (with GM part numbers) including Halibrand wheels, a 37.5gallon fuel tank, heavy-duty suspension, a 4.11 limited-slip differential, finned brake drums with special Bendix linings, Firestone 6.70-15 tires and brake cooling scoops.
The car suffered engine failure after two hours at Sebring. It car was then campaigned by Max Goldman and became the top finishing Corvette in C/M at Cumberland and Elkhart Lake in addition to setting the Haven Hill Climb record. Chevrolet continued to use the car for various engineering tests such as transmission and shock absorber testing.
After the summer of 1956, Bob Mclean, the original designer of the Corvette, acquired the car for street use.
