1979 AMC AMX Navigation
In 1979 BF Goodrich decided to promote its Radial T/A tires by running them at the Nurburgring 24-Hour race in Germany. They had Team Highball Inc., under the leadership of Amos Johnson, prepare two 1979 AMC Sprint/AMX's for the race. In less than three weeks the cars were painted the Goodrich corporate colors and modifications were performed hurriedly to prepare the cars for transport. The #2 car was raced by Lyn St. James, Gary Witzenburg, and Jim Downing. Even though mechanical problems persisted the car won its class. It was quite an accomplishment for the first time an American car entered this race.
The car was returned to the states where it raced in IMSA and the 24 Hours of Daytona from 1980-1982. The car was lost until recently discovered in a field. The #2 car presents as it looked externally for the Nurburgring race while internally as it raced in IMSA.
