1947 Ford Super Deluxe Sportsman Convertible

The two-door Sportsman, designed by Bob Gregorie and head illustrator Ross Cousins, was built at Ford's Iron Mountain plant in Michigan using a standard convertible body shell with sedan delivery taillights and fenders. The outer bodies were made from maple, birch, and mahogany, with each maple piece being carved from solid wood. The front floor mats had color-keyed carpet inserts, and the seats were upholstered with genuine leather facings and included French stitching. Standard equipment included power windows, including the rear quarter panes.

The Sportsman was in production only briefly, lasting from 1946 through 1947. The examples built that remained unsold were retitled and sold in 1948. Representing the finest style, quality, and top-end luxury from the Ford marque, they retailed for approximately $500 more than the standard convertible, placing it out of reach for most consumers.

This particular example is one of fewer than 100 examples believed to have survived from the 2,274 units built. This 1947 Ford Super DeLuxe Sportsman Convertible wears an older restoration that is finished in Pheasant Red with Maroon interior. The original wood is intact and was not partially or completely replaced during restoration.

This Sportsman has power windows, a power top, AM radio with cowl-mounted antenna, a cowl-mounted spotlight, dual fog lights, a fresh air heater, and a dashboard clock.
