This Porsche 911 Turbo 'Flat-Nose' Cabriolet is one of 114 Turbo Cabriolets optioned with the M505 Flat-Nose package and equipped with the Type-930.68 engine, and delivered new to the North American market for the 1988 model year. It is a factory-built 'S' version, wearing the factory-built Flat-Nose, or Flachbau, body package that became available in March of 1987.
The Type 930 Turbo was forced to withdraw from the North American market in 1979 as it could not meet stringent exhaust emissions standards. It returned to the United States in 1984 after the development of new electronic engine management. In 1983, a wealthy client had requested the factory built a street-legal version of the Type 935 racing car that wore a lowered, more aerodynamic nose. This request fell upon Porsche's 'Special Wishes Department' - now known as 'Porsche Exclusive' - to fulfill that dream. Aftermarket versions had proven popular, convincing Porsche to produce a limited number of its own.
The North American Flat-Nose package, Option 505, included louvered steel front fenders, boxed rockers, a new steel front hood with retracting headlamps, horizontal strakes, widened rear quarter panels, and a new front fascia with auxiliary lighting. Additionally, there was an extra oil radiator, and a large rear spoiler covering the engine's intercooler. This remained an exclusive option, guaranteed by its costly price tag in excess of $23,000.
All Turbos were equipped with a full climate control system and headlamp washers.
This particular example is finished in factory-applied Guards Red over Champagne leather. It has a power top, limited-slip differential, heated and 12-way-adjustable front seats with lumbar support, a raised-hub steering wheel with painted center crest, a Blaupunkt Reno stereo and multi-speaker package, and a security system. It rides on Fuchs forged alloy wheels with centers painted to match the body color.
This 911 Turbo was completed in late January of 1988 and delivered to Valley Imports in Fargo, North Dakota two months later, and sold to its first registered owner. It later entered the care of another collector in Ohio, and Wisconsin registrations are recorded from 1994 through 2013. In 2015, it was sold to an individual residing in Florida, then displaying a mere 2,401 miles. In November of 2019, the car received an engine and gearbox oil change, the brake system was flushed, the battery replaced, and a new fuel sending unit installed.
Currently, this Porsche has fewer than 2,700 miles on the odometer.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2021
