Hibbard & Darrin bodied thirty-five examples of the Springfield, Massachusetts-built Rolls-Royce Phantom I chassis. Built using the coachbuilder's patented Silentlyte method, with a cast aluminum inner framework and pressed aluminum outer panels, the body was both lightweight and strong. The convertible sedan wore a narrow molding at the hood that sweeps up in a blade-like curve as it reached the cowl. Beltline molding traverses the body side and was a common styling feature of Hibbard & Darrin's bodies of this era. The convertible top was relatively low with circus tent-like flaps that filled the space between trapezoidal side windows. When lowered, a center division served as protection from the wind.
It is believed that fewer than five examples of the Phantom I wore similar Transformal Phaeton coachwork. This particular example was delivered on April 13, 1928, to the original owner, Mr. George G. Bourne of New York City. By 1952, it was in the care of George A. Briggs of North Augusta, South Carolina, and within a year was passed to George Lawson, also of North Augusta. Archie Hough of Monroe, North Carolina acquired it in early 1955 and remained in his care until 1984 when it was purchased by Mr. Kershaw.
A restoration was completed in 1988 and shown a year later at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, receiving the Lucius Beebe Trophy as the most elegant Rolls-Royce present. In 1990 the car was awarded 2nd Place in the Phantom I class at the Rolls-Royce Owners' Club National Meet in Newport, Rhode Island. The Antique Automobile Club of America bestowed a Senior First Prize in 1992, as well as a National Award nomination. In Classic Car Club of America judging, it achieved Senior Premier honors at the 1993 Annual Meeting and bearing badge no. 1507SP. It also earned Best in Class honors at the Amelia Island Concours.By Daniel Vaughan | Jul 2021
