1965 Plymouth Belvedere Navigation
In the 1960s, manufacturers quickly realized that cars that raced on Sunday brought showroom traffic on Monday. With that in mind, a select group of Chrysler engineers was assigned to develop a race-ready package for their popular Plymouth Belvedere and Dodge Coronet models. The RO51 and WO51 models are the result.
Rules mandated that the cars must be based on the standard production models, but numerous modifications were made to create a truly competitive package designed strictly for off-road use. Lightweight steel body panels, special glass, and special front seats along with deletion of the rear seat were included. Of course, the heart of the package is the race-only A-990 426 Hem engine. With a long list of performance modifications, they proved to be legendary on the tracks and indeed, drove showroom traffic. This RO51 is one of about 100 produced. It was raced extensively on the west coast and ran well into the 1980s.
