The Big three's highly anticipated compact cars (Chevrolet Corvair, Ford Falcon, and Chrysler Valiant) arrived in 1960. The Valiant by Chrysler (it wouldn't officially become a Plymouth until 1961), combined creative engineering with daring 'Forward Look' styling. Two body styles were offered - a six-window sedan and a station wagon. The wagon was offered in two-seat and three-seat versions. Basic V-100 and up-level V-200 trim levels were available. The Valiant features a large six-passenger interior within modest exterior dimensions. Fully unitized body/frame construction and a torsion-bar front suspension contribute to agile handling and a remarkably smooth ride.
The 170 cubic-inch 'Slant Six' engine is inclined, allowing a lower hoodline. Transmission choices include a 3-speed manual with floor shift or Chrysler's excellent TorqueFlite automatic with push-button controls. Most noteworthy is the Valiant' unusual appearance, highlighted by a Chrysler 300-inspired grille and a simulated spare tire imprint on the rear deck. Valiant was Chrysler's only 1960 automobile without tailfins.
