1994 Guldstrand Corvette GS90 Navigation
Famous Corvette racer Dick Guldstrand, also known as 'Mr. Corvette,' sought to build a true 'World Class' American supercar based upon the then-new ZR-1. Rather than a standard appearing version, he sought to provide a distinctively designed bespoke style that harked back to the 'classic' racing Corvettes of the 1950s and 1960s, yet debut the latest features, such as being the first Corvette with projector headlights as well as the three-piece 18-inch wheels. Every panel is new and made of carbon fiber and every scoop or vent is functional. Only the windshield, door glass, and rear-view mirrors remain from the original design. The all-aluminum four-cam engine was designed by Lotus. Guldstrand upgraded the engine, suspension, chassis, wheels, and tires with success.
The all-aluminum, 4-cam, Lotus-designed engine easily matched or exceeded European exotic cars. The Mercury Marine-built engine, as modified by Doug Rippie for 475 horsepower from 350 cubic inches, surpassed a claimed 202 mph, with Dick Guldstrand driving.
Featuring a fully modified Guldstrand-Bilstein coil-over suspension, other upgrades included oversized Brembo cross-drilled brakes as well as a custom-tuned FLOWmaster exhaust system which allowed the LT-5 V8 to pull an additional 1,000 RPM over normal pushrod Corvettes.
This particular example served as a magazine test car, and brochure photo car, as well as being the very first customer-delivered GS-90. #002 also led the Corvette Parade from Stingray Island at the C7 Corvette introduction during the 2013 Monterey Historic Races at Laguna Seca Raceway.
