1935 Miller Ford Indy Car Roadster

This car is the last of the ten Ford-engined, two-man racers that were built by Miller for the 1935 Indianapolis 500. It was built in an incredibly short period of four months and was rushed to Indy with no development time and, in fact, chassis ten did not make the race. It did race in 1940 with an Offenhauser engine, sponsored by Marty Keller and driven by George Robson, and finished in 23rd place. The following year, still Offy-powered but with a new single-seat body, the Hughes Brothers-sponsored 'H-3 Special,' driven by Louis Tomei, started 24th and finished 11th, which was its best finish ever. After World War II, the H-3 Special appeared again in 1946, this time driven by Shorty Cantlon, who finished in 23rd place. It raced again at Indy in 1947, but in 1948 the car failed to qualify, and its Indianapolis career ended. After several other races, it was eventually donated to the Detroit Historical Society, who then sold the car at auction in 1992. It was restored to its original Flathead Ford-powered two-man configuration by a new owner, Chuck Davis of Chicago. In 2016, Bill Hoff became the proud new owner, and he has continued to drive the car at the Miller meet as well as the Indy Historic Racing Exhibition and other vintage race car track events.
